Changing behaviour around A&E use and helping patients get the right treatment

Residents are often unclear about the range of primary care services available to them, and often default to A&E even in moderate or minor clinical situations.

Using insights into why residents use A&E inappropriately, we created targeted interventions in and around A&E, highlighting the benefits, such as reduced waiting times, of going for treatment elsewhere.

In addition we created an interactive guide highlighting the full range of locations of all key services in the borough.

Results: Impact evaluation shows that:

  • A&E staff believe that the materials back up and provide credibility to the information they give to patients
  • A&E staff believe that the materials will help to encourage patients to reconsider their treatment options in the future
  • 9 out of 10 residents agreed that the guide helped them to understand where to go for different treatment types and when to access the different services.

"This is a really exciting piece of work. We're delighted with the materials that Resonant Media have produced and we're expecting great results from this project. Feedback from clinical staff working in our urgent care and emergency services is very positive."
Liz Price, Urgent Care Commissioning Manager
